Museum-Hopping in Los Angeles!

On Saturday the second, I went on a day trip with the photography program at my school to visit different museums in the LA area! Trips like this happen every couple of months, they had been planning this one several months in advance. When I first heard about it last semester, I made sure to put it in my calendar so I wouldn't forget! We went to the Getty Center to see an exhibit of Sally Mann's work, the Underground Museum to see work by Deana Lawson, and the Broad. Going to bigger art museums like the Getty and the Broad is so much fun because we don't have museums with such a high variety of items back where I'm from. First up, the Getty!

I'm a big fan of the Getty Museum, I went for the first time last semester on a different trip with the photo program and fell in love with the modern architecture. This time, we came to see a photography exhibit by an American photographer named Sally Mann. The exhibit was beautiful, it included lots of her work from the American South that explored family, history, and identity with landscape and portrait photography.

At the Underground Museum, we saw an exhibit by a photographer named Deana Lawson. A curator named Noah Davis founded the Underground Museum and knew that he wanted to include her and her work. The museum itself is the size of a average house, nowhere near the scale of the Getty or the Broad, but it was an intimate space suited for the exhibition it housed. I didn't end up with many photos from the inside, but you can read about the exhibit here. It's not the sort of exhibition that my school would necessarily promote and it didn't contain images or ideas that align with everyone's viewpoints, but seeing art made by people that are different than I am and that come from different backgrounds is an invaluable experience for any artist. It's good for artists to be able to talk about all different kinds of work, even if we don't necessarily agree with it.

This was my first time seeing The Broad, and I'm a fan of it now! It's right by the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA in another really cool, modern building.

I found out afterwards that it actually houses a really famous exhibit called the Infinity Room, we didn't see it, but the line for it was wrapped around the whole building! Inside was work from lots of different artists and designers ranging from sculpture to paintings to photography and design. They even had some of Andy Warhol's work, he seemed like a really weird guy to me and maybe that's why I find his work so interesting.

I thought the type of this exhibit title was particularly cool, they played around with scale and perspective to give the illusion of warped text on a flat wall!

I also came across this awesome quote in a book from the gift shop from Annie Leibovitz, another famous American photographer. To everyone who has put up with me so far, thank you!

I had a blast wandering through these three museums. LACMA is on my list as well, and someday I would really like to see art museums all around the world. Like reading makes a better writer, viewing art makes a better artist!

Thanks for reading!

xx, Hannah
