Why Photography?

Whenever I'm at a social gathering and the conversation turns to education, I nearly always get the question "Why?" when I mention that I'm going to school for photography and graphic design. Design is a different topic and I will be making a post about it, but I'm going to talk about photography specifically here.

Photography has always been something I've done. My earliest recollections are from middle school, taking cliche photographs and over-saturating them with editing apps on my phone. Those early creations make me laugh now, but I had to create not-so-good things then in order to get where I am now.

I got serious about photography in my freshman year of high school when I bought my DSLR camera. I got a Canon EOS Rebel T3 with the kit lens, an 18-55mm, and a 300mm zoom lens . Five years later, that's the gear I'm still using and it's going strong.

While I was in high school, I took a summer photography course at the Southwestern University of Visual Arts. That course gave my first experience with film photography, from working with an antique Canon camera to developing my images in a dark room. I don't think film photography is where my passion lies, but it was a valuable experience that fueled my love for the medium.

At this point, photography was the only thing that really made sense for me to go into. So when I was searching for colleges, I wanted a photography program that was not lumped into a visual arts major or something similar. Luckily, I found a program that suited me and started college in fall of 2017 as a declared photography major.

I've finished three semesters of college now and completed a fair amount of units towards my photography degree. I'm on the track for commercial photography and go to class every day looking forward to learning new things about this art, about myself as a photographer, and what my style is. Over the coming semester, spring 2019, I'm aiming to get over the anxiety I feel when I photograph people, because I do enjoy portraiture and I get excited when my images turn out well. I want to get off my campus more often to photograph in new places and further develop my style as well.

When someone asks you why you are doing what you are, what is your answer? I'm curious, drop a comment below! Thanks for reading!

xx, Hannah
